Save Energy with Loft Insulation
Looking to cut your energy bills? Making sure your loft insulation is up to the job does not only reduce heat loss in your home. It’s also the most cost-effective energy-saving measure there is.
“A quarter of heat is lost through the roof in an uninsulated home. Insulating your loft, attic or flat roof is an effective way to reduce heat loss and reduce your heating bills.” – Energy Saving Trust

How much loft insulation do I need?
Most new build homes have approx. 270-300mm of mineral wool insulation in their lofts.
In a trussed rafter loft, there’s usually 100mm between the rafters on the plasterboard ceiling. On top of that, running perpendicular, there should be a second layer of 170-200mm insulation.
If you have less than this, or none at all, you’re missing out on an opportunity to reduce heat loss, protect the environment and save money.
Loft insulation grants in Scotland
Wait, can’t I get it for free? In Scotland, the answer is maybe, but not from us (boo, sad face): If you meet certain conditions, e.g. being the recipient of a passport benefit, you may qualify for free loft insulation provided by the Scottish Government’s “Warmer Homes Scotland” programme.
If you qualify, the government’s appointed contractor Warmworks will handle the whole process from survey to completion. It’s definitely worth checking, so find out more and apply via Home Energy Scotland.
Interest-free loans for loft insulation in Scotland
If you don’t qualify for the free insulation grant, you may still qualify for a Home Energy Scotland interest-free loan.
The criteria are less stringent so most people will qualify for this – and you could receive cashback of up to £400!
However, each type of energy-saving measure has a price cap and for loft insulation, the maximum loan is £1,000.
Unlike the grant, the HES loan allows you to choose your own insulation contractor (like us!) as long as they are competent and can provide a formal quotation.

Boarding over your loft insulation
You may have been warned about placing boards on top of the insulation, and rightfully so!
Placing boards directly on the trusses and squashing the insulation risks reducing ventilation and the thermal efficiency of the insulation. This can lead to serious damp and mould issues.
To avoid that, any loft flooring must be raised above the insulation with a gap beneath the boards to allow enough airflow.
That’s why we use energy-saving LoftZone, the UK’s only BBA-approved raised loft flooring system. Even better, we are the only authorised LoftZone installer in Scotland and a member of the Federation of Master Builders – uniquely positioned to protect your insulation and NHBC warranty.

How much could I save?
The Energy Saving Trust estimates that you could save £580 a year by insulating an uninsulated loft in a detached house with 270mm of insulation.
If energy prices continue to rise, this cost-saving will only improve and the cost of your insulation will be covered after only 1 year of energy savings.
If you already have just a single 120mm layer, you could save £40 a year at April 2022 energy prices by topping up to 270mm. With these savings, you would recoup the installation cost in approximately 10-15 years.
How much does it cost?
From loft boarding to loft insulation, we offer transparent pricing for our services by charging a flat rate for our mineral fibre insulation depending on the thickness required:
100mm – £10/m2
170mm – £15/m2
270mm – £25/m2
An average-sized loft of 30m2 would cost £450 for 170mm, or £750 for 270mm loft insulation.
All prices include fitting and any VAT at the prevailing rate.

Fantastic company. Came out to us on Friday afternoon and got on with the job in super quick time. Delighted with the end result.
Andrew and his team were very professional and helpful. The booking system was online which we liked for convenience and appointment reminders were sent out. The team turned up 1st thing and got on with the job with no slacking off and did a fantastic job within 1 day. Have absolutely no hesitation in recommending loft boarding Scotland.
I’m very impressed with these guys. The work they did was outstanding and the price they charged was very reasonable. They managed to see me on short notice, and the work itself was completed in no time. I’m absolutely delighted. Very highly recommended.
