Herald Scotland interview with founder Andrew: West Lothian firm creates jobs after pandemic challenges

Andrew Johnstone Loft Boarding Scotland

After starting Loft Boarding Scotland in 2017, our managing director Andrew had to tackle challenges all small businesses encounter: Hiring your first staff, finding suitable premises, optimising processes while keeping your focus on high-quality customer service.

But in 2020, the COVID pandemic added a whole new level of challenges to the mix, especially for small businesses. Keeping operational while ensuring the safety of staff and customers alike was no easy feat.

But not only did we manage to keep boarding lofts. We also managed to grow our team (and our fleet of bright orange vans!) considerably during that time, creating new jobs and even more storage space in Scottish homes.

Wanting to find out more about how we braved the pandemic and why Andrew started his own business in the first place, The Herald Scotland interviewed him for their Business HQ section. Check it out!

Response to Coronavirus – 23rd March

Good evening all. For the avoidance of any doubt, and in line with the instructions given by the PM this evening, we regret to announce that we are ceasing all installations effectively immediately. This also includes surveys in your home, though remote video surveys will be available shortly.

We will be in touch with all of our customers who have bookings to be rescheduled in due course and want to thank you for your patience.

We are fully prepared to resume at full pace as soon as the situation improves and restrictions are eased.

In the meantime, we would be delighted to continue to answer your queries about flooring your loft, and will help in any way we can.

Stay safe, wash hands and remain indoors 👍

Warm regards,
Andrew and the team at Loft Boarding Scotland.

Response to Coronavirus – 17th March

In response to the government’s announcement this evening I want to inform you, our customers, about the steps we are putting in place to play our part in helping to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, whilst ensuring your survey or installation can go ahead as planned.

Besides following the advice to wash our hands regularly, all of our surveyors and installers have hand sanitising gel in our vans for use immediately before entering and after leaving your home. Our vehicles, phones and surveying tools are all wiped down between visits.

On arrival, we will wear nitrile gloves and politely refuse to shake hands. We hope you’re not offended, and we will instead offer a friendly wave or elbow shake.

We will only need to be in your hall and loft spaces, but if we need to use the bathroom, we will first ask permission and be sure to wipe down all surfaces after use.

Before leaving, we will wipe down all touched surfaces including switches, handles, banister and loft hatch.

All of our staff members are strictly adhering to the guidelines that if we, or one of our family members, develop either a persistent cough or a temperature then we will self-isolate at home for 14 days – in which case your appointment may need to be rescheduled if we cannot use another team member.

If you are self-isolating and would still like a quote then we can attempt to provide you with one by discussing your loft over a phone or video call. If you are able to access the loft and can take measurements, then we’d be happy to guide you through the process.

We are committed to exceptional customer experiences and will do our utmost to maintain our recognised high standard of service throughout these unusual times. As the situation evolves and any new guidance is issued, we will respond accordingly and keep you informed.

Warm regards,
Andrew and the team at Loft Boarding Scotland.
